The Story of Emna Doghri
Emna Doghri was born in 1985 in Tunis, Tunisia, into a family where fragrance was not luxury but daily ritual. She grew up surrounded by the smells of the Mediterranean, jasmine climbing courtyard walls, orange blossom water for special occasions, cedar from the nearby forests, and the spices, incense, and resins that drifted from the souks. This early sensory education created an olfactory memory bank that would later distinguish her work from peers trained solely in European traditions. At age 18, she left Tunisia for France to study chemistry, eventually earning her engineering degree. But laboratory work alone could not satisfy her creative impulses. She enrolled at Cinquième Sens, the prestigious Parisian perfume school, where she met Monique Schlienger, an experienced perfumer who became her mentor and passed on the technical rigor of French classical perfumery. An internship at Firmenich, one of the world's largest fragrance companies, exposed her to industrial-scale production and the collaborative processes behind mainstream scents. In 2010, Doghri took the independent path, founding Floralys Fragrances, her own olfactory creation studio in Paris. This move allowed her to work directly with niche brands seeking distinctive signatures rather than conforming to the safety of major house briefs. She has since created perfumes for Alexandre.J, Antinomie, Noème, Maison Rebatchi, and Maison Cataliya, among others. In addition to her client work, she co-founded BLACK ANTS, her own niche fragrance brand, as a vehicle for fully realizing her personal creative vision without compromise.
Philosophy
Doghri's creative philosophy centers on respectful innovation. She believes the future of perfumery lies not in rejecting its past but in reinterpreting classical structures through contemporary sensibilities. Her work often takes familiar forms, the chypre, the oriental, the floral bouquet, and introduces subtle disruptions that prevent them from feeling derivative. She is drawn to contrasts: clean lines against baroque flourishes, European formality against Mediterranean warmth, minimalism against abundance. Her Tunisian heritage and French training create a natural dialogue in her compositions. She approaches each brief as an opportunity to tell a specific story, researching the brand's history, visual identity, and intended audience before touching raw materials. This methodical preparation results in fragrances that feel deeply considered rather than impulsive, layered rather than linear.
Creative Approach
Doghri's signature style bridges two worlds: the heritage of fine French perfumery she absorbed at Cinquième Sens and the sensory abundance of her North African upbringing. She describes her own approach as modern with baroque touches, meaning she favors clean, legible structures adorned with unexpected flourishes that reward close attention. Her compositions often feature rich florals, particularly rose and jasmine, supported by resinous bases and spiced accents that evoke the Mediterranean without lapsing into cliché. Technical precision characterizes her work. She understands how to build longevity through base note architecture rather than simply overdosing fixatives. Her fragrances tend to evolve in distinct phases, each revealing new facets while maintaining coherence with what came before. Critics have noted her particular skill with oud and amber materials, where she balances their potency with contrasting elements that prevent heaviness. She is equally comfortable creating for the Middle Eastern market, where intensity is prized, and for European audiences who prefer subtlety. This versatility has made her a sought-after collaborator for brands seeking authentic character in an increasingly homogenized industry.
