The Artisan
The Story of Domitille Michalon-Bertier
Domitille Michalon-Bertier spent her formative years in Vanuatu, surrounded by tropical landscapes that first awakened her sense of smell. The woods and spices of those islands left an indelible mark. Back in France, she pursued chemistry before discovering ISIPCA, the legendary perfumery school in Versailles, where she enrolled in 1992. She joined IFF as a trainee in 1994 and never looked back. Thirteen years later, in 2007, she earned the title of Senior Perfumer. Her career spans over three decades and includes work for the most prestigious houses: Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, Dior, Lancôme, Marc Jacobs, Viktor&Rolf, Van Cleef & Arpels, and Comme des Garçons. In February 2021, she ascended to lead the perfumers at IFF's Neuilly headquarters. A true Parisian, she draws energy from the city's gardens and literary culture. The publishing house that shares her surname is no coincidence, she comes from a family of readers. She has no television at home but always has three books queued on her nightstand. She is also a mother of three.
Philosophy
For Domitille, perfumery begins in the mind before it reaches the nose. She describes it as a deeply cerebral exercise, comparing her process to a composer writing a score without instruments, hearing every note internally. She starts with a blank page and a pencil, transcribing the fragrance she already perceives in her imagination. Only then does her assistant blend the materials so she can verify what she conceived. She believes in drawing inspiration from everywhere, from chance encounters and museum exhibitions to flavors and memories. Her first creation was a childlike thing, a lavender fragrance assembled from sprigs in her grandmother's garden. That instinct to bottle personal moments has never left her.
Creative Approach
Domitille's signature lies in unexpected combinations and a genuine passion for natural materials. She constantly expands her palette, seeking new ingredients that bring depth and authenticity to her work. Her compositions tend toward the vibrant and layered, sometimes evoking the improvisational energy of jazz or the atmospheric tension of noir fiction. She builds fragrances that hold the wearer in a specific imagined world, manipulating texture and emotion in equal measure. Her approach is playful yet rigorous, treating each creation as an opportunity to translate intangible feelings into something tangible that can be worn and lived with.
