The Story of Cristiano Canali
Cristiano Canali trained as a pharmacist in Italy, earning a Masters degree and writing his thesis on Ayurvedic products. A pivotal trip to southern India introduced him to sandalwood oil producers supplying the perfumery industry, igniting his fascination with the craft. He enrolled at ISIPCA in Versailles to formalize his training, stepping away from a secure career to pursue this new path. Canali began at IFF Netherlands before moving to the IFF Paris Creative Center, where he worked closely with some of the industry's most respected masters. He has served as a judge for The Art and Olfaction Awards. His work spans brands including Masque Milano, Zoologist Perfumes, Alfa Romeo Perfumes, and Artimique. He currently works with Argeville in southern France and joined MANE in Milan in February 2024.
Philosophy
Nature provides the answers in its minimalistic complexity. Canali invests time understanding each client's needs, their line, and where they want to go before translating those requirements into fragrance. He focuses on silage and intimacy, simplification and faceting. The drive to express himself was strong enough to abandon a secure career, and he approaches every project with curiosity, seeking to explore synergies and contrasts in ingredients to develop new olfactive ideas.
Creative Approach
Canali favors natural ingredients with particular affinity for sandalwood, which serves as his personal link between pharmacy and perfumery. He gravitates toward floral notes including magnolia, cassie, orange blossom, tuberose, jasmine, and violet for their complexity and sensuality regardless of gender. He also works with animal derivatives such as castoreum, civet, ambergris, and beeswax, appreciating their unique odor profiles and warmth even in small traces. His creative approach involves building facets and exploring contrasts to create distinctive compositions.
