The Artisan
The Story of Céline Ellena
Céline Ellena was born into perfume royalty in Grasse, France. Her father was Jean-Claude Ellena, her uncle Bernard Ellena, and her grandfather Peter Ellena worked at Chiris. Every family gathering seemed to hum with aromatic undertones. She studied psychology and linguistics before answering the call of perfume, enrolling at ISIPCA in Versailles and graduating in 1994. She spent a decade at Harmann & Reimer (now Symrise), then worked at Charabot before joining The Different Company in 2004. She inherited her father's position there, creating favorites like Sel de Vetiver, Sublime Balkiss, Pure eVe, and De Bachmakov. In 2010, she founded her own creation studio, NeZeN, and began working freelance for international brands. Beyond prestige perfumery, she has composed for shower gels (Le Petit Marseillais, Ultra Doux), sun creams for Nivea, and skincare for L'Oréal and Yves Rocher. Her work for Hermès includes L'Ambre des Merveilles and Les Parfums de la Maison. She describes perfumers as "embroiderers of memories, weavers of bonds, and repairers of souls."
Philosophy
Ellena believes perfume speaks a language without words. It enters without ceremony, bypassing the filters we place on other senses, striking memories both vague and precise. She approaches fragrance as an illusionist, creating masks or adornments, always chasing smells. Her workshops, branded "A vue de Nez," teach people to choose perfume the way they choose wine or olive oil. She rejects outdated pyramid structures, urging clients to let their hearts guide them. For Ellena, the nose is the most sincere sense, instantaneous and seamless. She advocates looking with your nose, learning to smell as a daily practice, both literally and figuratively. Her writing, blog (Chroniques Olfactives, launched 2009), and social media all explore this philosophy of olfactory awareness.
Creative Approach
Ellena favors clean, elegant compositions that feel natural yet intentional. She draws on her Grasse heritage to work confidently with raw materials from fig and peach to vetiver and iris. Her work spans from accessible shower gels to haute parfumerie, bringing the same attention to detail to both. She gravitates toward transparent, modern structures with subtle complexity. Notable techniques include balancing salty vetiver notes, layering marine and amber accords, and capturing the immediacy of florals like magnolia and peony. Her fragrance names often reference sensations rather than stories, letting the composition speak directly to the wearer.
