The Story of Bruno Jovanovic
Bruno Jovanovic grew up in Paris, the son of parents who had fled the former Yugoslavia. This dual heritage gave him both a French sensibility and a Slavic openness of mind that still defines his approach to his craft. As a child, he devoured Marcel Proust alongside Marvel comics, seeking both impressionistic romance and the escape of imagined worlds. But nothing captivated him quite like the odors on his mother's dressing table, where bottles of Shalimar, Calèche, and Cabochard stood in formation. He remembers her perfume as a way to keep her beside him even when she was not there. After earning a degree in Physics and Chemistry from the Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Jovanovic enrolled at ISIPCA, the prestigious French perfumery school, where he studied under Dominique Ropion. He graduated with top honors and relocated to New York, the city of his superheroes. There he joined IFF, working alongside legends like Sophia Grojsman and Carlos Benaïm. He spent over twenty years moving between New York and Paris, creating fragrances that would become modern classics. His early success with Abercrombie & Fitch Fierce Cologne in 2002 announced him to the industry, and he has not stopped since, logging over sixty fragrances across designer, niche, and celebrity lines. He now serves as Principal Perfumer at DSM-Firmenich, where he continues to shape the fragrance landscape with both commercial powerhouses and artistic collaborations.
Philosophy
Jovanovic borrows his guiding principle from Immanuel Kant: Beauty is universal and has no concept. This idea shapes everything he does. He is not interested in complexity for its own sake. Instead, he searches for the essential, stripping away excess until only the clear message remains. He deconstructs his own ideas constantly, questioning each element until he arrives at what cannot be removed without losing the whole. Time plays a crucial role in his thinking. He considers how raw materials mature, how their olfactory character transforms over months and years, and how this evolution should inform the composition from the start. His approach is both intellectual and sensory, drawing equally from art exhibitions and philosophy as from the simple pleasure of an afternoon. He finds equal fascination in olfactorily transposing the experience of being twenty years old as in capturing the velvety texture of a yogurt. This eclecticism is not a contradiction but a philosophy. He draws on all his passions indiscriminately to create fragrances that penetrate to the heart of things, fragrances that are simultaneously simple and subtle, immediate and lasting.
Creative Approach
Jovanovic works toward a signature formula that communicates with clarity and instant recognition. He limits the number of raw materials he uses, preferring fewer bases that do more work. This restraint defines his style. He is not a maximalist in the traditional sense, yet his fragrances possess remarkable depth because of what he leaves out as much as what he includes. His relationship with patchouli borders on obsession. He calls it his favorite ingredient and designed Frédéric Malle's Monsieur as an ode to this material. Of it, he says: If magic had a smell, this would be it. He is fascinated by the dichotomy between its radiance and its dark earthy effects, the tension between warm and cold that patchouli holds within a single molecule. This duality appears throughout his work. Whether he is creating a mass-market blockbuster like Armani My Way or a niche statement like Amouage Opus XII Rose Incense, Jovanovic seeks that balance of light and shadow, simplicity and nuance, the universal and the deeply personal.
