Character
The Story of Tahitian Vanilla
Tahiti's tropical vanilla, Vanilla ×tahitentis, offers a lighter, more floral profile than its cousins. Expect delicate anise whispers, sun-ripened cherry, and whispers of plum—a dreamy, tropical softness that elevates any fragrance into sunlit elegance.
Heritage
Tahitian vanilla's story begins in 1848 when French Admiral Hamelin brought cuttings from Réunion to the islands of French Polynesia. Unlike Vanilla planifolia from mainland Americas, the Tahitian variety evolved in isolation, eventually classified as Vanilla ×tahitentis—a natural hybrid. The island of Taha'a earned the name "Vanilla Island" for producing the world's finest expression of this species. Sylvaine Delacourte, renowned perfumer at Guerlain, championed Tahitian vanilla in compositions like Instant Magic, praising its divergence from the expected vanilla profile. Today, Taha'a remains the spiritual home of this rare ingredient, supplying a fraction of global vanilla demand and commanding premium prices among serious fragrance houses.
