Persian and Arab alchemists perfected rose water and attar distillation techniques centuries before modern chemistry emerged, while ancient Greek and Roman texts document rose petals pressed into ointments and perfumes. The city of Grasse in Provence became the epicenter of European rose cultivation by the 18th century, when court demand for floral fragrances drove farmers to replace staple crops with rose fields. By the early 1900s, Grasse employed thousands of workers in the intensive manual harvest of rose petals, a scene captured in historic photographs from 1915 showing crews stripping petals at dawn to preserve volatile aromatic compounds before heat could degrade them. The rose's journey from ancient ceremonial use to Grasse workshops to modern fine fragrance represents one of perfumery's most continuous ingredient lineages.
