The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The name is the concept. In 1995, Jacques Cavallier Belletrud built Poeme around a structural idea: what if the notes didn't descend the pyramid in order, but appeared alternately, like verses in a poem? No neat top-to-base architecture. Instead, a composition where the opening isn't prologue, it's simultaneous with what comes after. The fragrance opens with bright citrus and green florals appearing together, creating an immediate layering of sweetness and bitterness. There's a tension from the start that never fully resolves, and the arrangement keeps surprising as notes that typically appear in drydown show up earlier, while top notes linger longer than expected. The structure invites you to discover new combinations each time you wear it.
The non-traditional arrangement isn't arbitrary. Yellow florals, narcissus, mimosa, Himalayan poppy, bring a bitter, almost herbal quality that cuts through the sweetness. White florals, tuberose, jasmine, ylang-ylang, bring the creamy, slightly indolic warmth. In Poeme, they're in conversation the entire wear. The fruit layer, peach and plum, bridges the gap, but never smooths it over. The tension never fully resolves, and that creates an ever-shifting balance that holds attention from the first spray through the final moments.
The evolution
The first hour is where Poeme earns attention. Narcissus brings cool green bitterness alongside bergamot and mandarin, while peach and plum sweeten the entry. Then the Himalayan poppy arrives, that unusual bitter note that adds depth to the composition. The middle isn't a hand-off so much as a layering: white florals and yellow florals sharing the stage. Tuberose, jasmine, and ylang-ylang interweave with the more austere florals, creating richness without smoothness. Vanilla keeps appearing at the edges, never dominating, always softening the sharper edges. The drydown isn't a single accord taking over. Instead, it's that warm powder-and-musk conversation continuing, with the floral contrast persisting into the final stages. The balance between creamy warmth and herbal bitterness never fully settles, making each wearing a slightly different experience.
Cultural impact
Poeme arrived with a non-traditional structure where notes layer rather than transition. The approach set it apart from the house's other offerings. The non-linear composition caught attention for the way it kept revealing different facets over time, with the contrast between bitter and sweet florals creating unusual depth. Three decades after its release, the fragrance continues to find new admirers drawn to its layered approach and the way the bitter notes create unexpected complexity within a familiar floral framework. The powdery drydown adds another dimension that extends its appeal beyond the initial spray.
